Katie and I are both exhausted after a long week, so I am going to keep it pretty short.
Earlier this week, the doctors found out that Caroline has a bacteria called serratia. I think they said that 50% of the population has it, or something like that. It is very common. They decided not to treat it, but the nurses have to wear "isolation gear" when working on Caroline so that they do not spread it to another baby.
The doctors yesterday started some tests to see if Caroline has an infection. After 24 hours, the cultures are showing a little bit of growth, which may indicate an infection. The doctors cannot determine right now if the growth is the serratia or if it is an infection. They will know around lunch time tomorrow. If it is just the serratia, they may remove her breathing tube. If it is an infection, they will continue to treat her and hold off on removing the tube....or they may try to impress me with another fancy medical term. I think I am going to start firing back with fancy latin law terms, although I don't know what any of them mean, either.
The good news is that Caroline is acting great. They were able to turn the breathing tube down to a low level today and she did well. We just called to check in and Caroline is almost 4 pounds even. If they don't take out the breathing tube soon, she is going to rip it out.
Hope you two get some rest. Great that she is still gaining weight with all that is going on!
ReplyDeleteryan, one of your mom's favorite scriptures has always been, "a merry heart does good like a medicine" (prov. 17:22). your ability to find bright spots and to create a little humor (ie--your lofty latin law phrases) can't help but lighten your load in these long days of waiting and watching. my prayer for you today is that God will check the infection and that He will put a song in your heart!
