Caroline wanted a lot of attention today with her CPAP. She received care from 4 doctors, 3 nurses and 2 respiratory therapists. They just cannot seem to get her CPAP how they want it. The doctors said that she has big nostrils, but a small airway (another one of Dad's genes for poor Caroline), which makes it hard to get the right fit. At some point over the weekend, someone changed her prong size on her CPAP and it was not a good fit. The doctors said that the pressure from the CPAP was leaking at her nose and not making it to her lungs. So, they worked with her all day to try to get it right. As they said, they "rigged" it to try to make it work for her. Cooper's are good at rigging things, so this makes me especially proud. However, if the rig does not work, they will have to intubate her, but only for a few days until she can recover. They essentially said the CPAP has not been working at all for her and she has had to do most of the breathing on her own. So, she is exhausted.

Caroline had a bunch more gunk in her nose airway today. They gave her another deep cleaning to get it all out. There is some swelling in the airway from all of the gunk and the cleanings. They are going to give her a steroid tonight to help with the swelling.
She also had some fluid in her lungs due to her poor breathing. They gave her a diuretic to drain the fluid. If you are like me, I thought that diuretics only had one purpose and that it had nothing to do with fluid in your lungs. That is why I wear a suit to work instead of scrubs.
They also gave her another blood transfusion. She responded really well to the extra blood last time, so hopefully it rejuvenates her again.
We got a good report on her eyes. They are in the process of maturing and they like the development. They do not see any signs of trouble at this point.
Besides that, it was an uneventful day. Here is another picture especially for my Aunt Nancy.

Also, here is another video: here
Oh, she's working soooooo hard to breathe...it is difficult to watch even on video--I imagine it is very painful to see in person. I want to whisper in her ears, "It gets better, little one."
ReplyDeleteShe definitely captured my attention, and my heart, yesterday. I'm so glad I got to meet your sweet angel and am glad she'll be able to take it easy with the breathing tube. Now she can focus on packing on the lbs =) I was so surprised how active she is and loved seeing her squirm around and listen to her little cries. I love her so much <3!
