O(h) positive update!

Caroline received her blood transfusion Friday night and it appears to be a success.  We found out she has O-positive blood, hence the cheesy subject title.  We saw here early Saturday morning and she had her color back.  She has had fewer breathing problems in the last 24-36 hours.  Also, her stomach has not rejected food since the transfusion.  The doctors are now talking about taking her off of CPAP if she has another good night.  However, they may not out of precaution.

When I heard that Caroline was going to get a blood transfusion, it made me a little nervous.  It sounds scary.  The doctors said it was a very safe procedure.  I later found out that Katie's Dad, who was born prematurely back in the early 1950's (before blogging was cool), received a blood transfusion as a baby and it apparently really set him on the right path.

Caroline lost a little weight on Thursday and Friday since she was rejecting food.  However, she gained all of that weight back and more.  She is now just a few grams under 2 pounds, 10 ounces.  She also grew almost an inch in the last week.  Her head grew as well, which is important at this stage.  She is now about 15 inches long. I mistakenly said she was 14 inches at birth.  She was actually just a little over 13 inches.

Katie and I both held her hand as she slept tonight.  Katie let go and she got really mad.  It actually made her oxygen levels go down.  I gave her my hand and she recovered.  I have also noticed that our voices are actually calming to her.  It is a pretty neat feeling that she knows when we are there.
