Restful Day

As we said last night, the breathing tube is back.  Caroline was having to work way too hard to breathe with the CPAP.  They also noticed too much CO2 in her blood.  Since the goal right now is to gain weight, they decided to give her a break.  The doctors had a hard time intubating her, which leads them to believe there is another obstruction deeper in her airway.  This obstruction is like the other one - she will likely grow out of it.  They also saw that one of her lungs had collapsed and was "foggy".  This will be fixed by the breathing tube as well as meds.  We have no idea how long she will be intubated.  Too long and it is bad for her lungs.  Not long enough and we are not much better off than before.  She will get it out when she is ready.

They are still giving her steroids to help with the swelling in her airway.  She is also getting a sedative to keep her from getting agitated.  Now that she is a little bigger, they do not want her to pull out the tube.  They are also using a "chest pt" on her back and chest to try to break up the fluid in her lungs.  Katie described it as a massage, although Caroline hates it.  However, it worked every time they used it on her.

Caroline actually gained 10 grams today.  She did not gain any weight on Sunday or Monday.  I am glad that she did not lose weight during this time, since she has been working so hard.  She is 3 pounds, 3.5 ounces (yes, I now count half ounces).

Her nurses continue to sing "Sweet Caroline" to her and I am pretty sure she is a Neil Diamond fan.  Who isn't?

Katie and I went on a walk tonight and saw Dr. Arnold from the Little Couple (TLC Show).  They live in our neighborhood and Dr. Arnold is actually one of Caroline's Dr.'s from time to time.
